Every year Canada produces enough cigarettes to
pave a sidewalk from
Victoria BC to St. John's NFL
with just the filters

Ban the Butt is a non-governmental organization and does not ask for funding or donations... only your signature.

Ban the Butt relies on the strength of action by individuals, groups and organizations.

There are countless studies and a wealth of information on the serious negative impact caused by improperly disposed cigarette butts and tobacco pollution.

Ban the Butt presents the solution to this toxic form of waste that litters every aspect of our environment from streets to beaches. There is no single place free of the contamination that is the byproduct of  waste from tobacco use.

Cigarette butts are the number one priority in the elimination of dangerous plastics.

There is an urgent need for change.

The Liberal government has promised to ban Dangerous Plastics in 2021, and although cigarette butts outnumber any other form of plastic waste, and are the only form that releases toxic chemicals and carcinogens into our food chain and ecosystem; tobacco related waste is so far being ignored.

This is impacting our health in ways we do not fully understand.

Let us stop the problem at the source.

The Call for Action

There has never been a better time for making a change than right now. In August of 2019 an environmental organization in Victoria BC modeled what can happen if a $.05 refundable deposit was applied to cigarette butts and cigar tips.

An unprecedented response brought in over 640,000 cigarette butts; compared to 285,000 collected in a nation wide effort that include 21 Canadian cities in the spring of 2019.

The solution to tobacco pollution is here.

The Power of Petition

It is vital that single use plastics used in the tobacco industry are included in the nation wide ban of Dangerous Plastics to be tabled in the House of Commons.

Our government does not recognize any e-petition platform other than their own. So, although well meaning, e-petitions on any platform other than the House of Commons is only a feel good exercise.

Ban the Butt presents the two methods available to Canadians to voice their desire for change: the Paper Petition and the House of Commons e-petition platform.

Every signature counts.

Making a difference

You hold the key to sustainable change. Your voice is your vote to eliminate the source of tobacco pollution and mitigate the environmental impact of tobacco litter already contaminating our eco-system and food sources.
