Dear Ms./Mr. FirstName LastName,
As one of your constituents, I am writing to ask for your help in supporting a cause important to me: Reducing dangerous plastics in tobacco waste.
Canada sells twenty-seven billion cigarettes annually. Cigarette waste is the number one form of litter contaminating our ecosystems, wildlife and food chains with known carcinogens and microplastics. Harmful to our environment, health and economy, this cross-party issue impacts all Canadians.
We already have a refund/deposit and Environmental Handling Fee system on products such as batteries and aluminum cans. Similarly, cigarette waste can be recycled by separating compostables from toxic waste and plastics. However, this system is rarely used as awareness campaigns have not stopped the vast majority of butts ending up on the ground, into our food, soils and water.
The “Ban the Butt” campaign will take a petition before the House of Commons to ask that the plastics used in tobacco products are included in the ban on single-use and dangerous plastics proposed by the sitting government. We suggest this must vitally include a ban on single-use plastics in tobacco products, a refundable deposit of $.05 per tobacco product to ensure its collection, and a $.05 Environmental Handling Fee to support the development of recycling infrastructure.
Now is the vital time to take Canada from growing the problem to leading the solution. I ask that you support this valuable petition, share these concerns with the Minister of the Environment, and request fair legislation that supports the health and future of Canadian citizens, wildlife and natural spaces.
Your support now will demonstrate your dual commitment to the environmental and health concerns of your constituents, as well as the image of our country as a leader in positive change on the world stage.
Thank you for your commitment to these efforts. I look forward to receiving your reply.
Sincerely,
